Eircom outage affects 60,000 Mayo customers

There was widespread distruption for Eircom landline customers across Mayo yesterday (Thursday ) when an outage at an exchange left 60,000 customers without a service. The problem persisted from the start of business and continued throughout the day with repair crews saying progress had been slow.

Eircom’s customer care department confirmed that an “outage” in the Eircom exchange in Castlebar caused the disruption to 096, 098, and 094 phone lines.

By 2pm they said that 90 per cent of customers had service restored but business people in Castlebar reported disruptions to lines well into the evening.

As well as phone lines, credit card machines were also affected causing a serious problem for shopkeepers and customers alike.
