Charges for man who intervened while drunk girl was

An 18-year-old man who interfered with a Garda arrest of a 16-year-old girl, who was intoxicated, appeared before Ballina District Court on Tuesday for the public order offence.

Garda Michael Munnelly told the court that after midnight on July 13 he was called to a fight which had broken out among a number of youths in Bohernasup. While a young intoxicated girl was being placed in the Garda car, Sean Devlin, Corrimbla South, Ballina, and another male intervened, shouting, roaring, and being aggressive to gardaí.

Both were arrested, but on the way to the garda station the second male escaped from the Garda car when stopped at traffic lights. He was later apprehended.

Defending solicitor Peter Loftus said that Devlin, who had no previous convictions, was pleading guilty to the charges. Sentencing was adjourned until December 8 2009.
