Belmullet Tidy Towns nominated for the Calor Sustainable Community Champion

Calor, Ireland’s leading supplier of rural energy solutions, has this week announced the shortlist of nominees for the new Calor Sustainable Community Champion 2014, the search for the most green or sustainable community in the country. Entries were  received entries from every corner of Mayo. Belmullet Tidy Towns has been shortlisted as the Mayo nominee.

The community-focused Belmullet Tidy Towns has been placing eco-friendly and sustainable living at the centre of its ethos for the last number of years. The community has come together in a concerted effort to improve sustainability efforts through various community projects and campaigns, such as ‘Bin Your Butt’, the community freecycle garden, and a drive to install rainwater harvesting, and implementing energy saving process in public buildings in the town, as well as other dedicated sustainable measures through Fuinneamh Inmhaireanta Iorrais.

Speaking on behalf of Belmullet Tidy Towns, Rosemarie Mangan said, “The Belmullet community is the very reason that the Tidy Towns committee has gone from strength to strength over the last 32 years. With the help of local volunteers, residents, businesses, agencies, clubs and organisations, the town and its environs have improved enormously. Our community efforts are improving every year and we are eager to do our best, and be the best that we can. We are delighted with our silver medals but of course, we are now going for gold! So, if we are crowned the Calor Sustainable Community Champion 2014 perhaps it would help to give us that crucial Midas touch!”

Voting is now open to each and every member of the public through the Calor Facebook page.  To support your local green fingered and sustainable group, the Belmullet Tidy Towns and play your part in helping them to be recognised as the first ever Calor Sustainable Community Champion for 2014, visit Calor’s Gallery of Nominees at  www.facebook.com/calorireland
