Final eight sides emerge in senior and intermediate championships

The final round of group games in both the Treanlaur Catering Senior Football Championship and the Egan Jewellers Intermediate Football Championships took place last weekend. In the senior championship, the defending county champions Ballaghaderreen were held to their second draw so far this year in the championship, when Ballinrobe engaged them in a 0-20 to 2-14 shootout — alas for the south Mayo men it was not enough for them as Garrymore’s win over Aghamore saw them through with Ballagh’ into the last eight.

In group one, Breaffy shook off the shock of their big defeat to neighbours Castlebar Mitchels in the previous round to get the job done against a teak-tough Davitts side in Ballindine and join the Mitchels in the hat for the last eight.

Michael Conroy made his long awaited return from injury in that game for the border men and will be a big boost for Mayo ahead of the challenges coming up in the next few weeks. In group two, Ballintubber and Ballina Stephenites were already both through and they met to sort out who would take first place in the group and it was the west Mayo men who emerged victorious and look determined to wrestle back the title they surrendered last year after winning the previous two. In group three it was all down to who wanted it more when Knockmore and Westport met in their game, and it was the men from north Mayo who grabbed the initiative early on and never let it go to book their last eight spot alongside Charlestown. Battling it out to keep their senior status in the relegation play-offs will be Davitts, Shrule-Glencorrib, Tourmakeady and Aghamore.

In the intermediate championship, Kilmaine and The Neale will make it out of group one, with Bonniconlon entering the relegation roulette wheel. The other sides to make the last eight in the grade are Killala, Burrishoole, Moy Davitts, Parke, Kiltane and Kiltimagh, while Achill, Belmullet and Mayo Gaels will be looking to avoid the drop to junior for next year.

The draw for the quarter-finals in all grades will take place after the Connacht final, the final round of group games in the junior championship will take place this weekend.
