A round-up of community events and news

Jaime and Tara Galligan, Belmullet, who dance with The Redmond Academy of Irish Dancing. They won six first place prizes, a second, and third at the recent Ballinrobe Feis. Their achievement is all the more impressive as they moved from Kuwait less than two years ago and they only took up dancing then.

Furnace Walk

The 17th Annual 10km Furnace walk in aid of  Mayo Roscommon Hospice takes place on Sunday July 19, commencing from Derrada Community Centre at 2pm (located off Newport/Mulranny road ). Sponsorship cards are available. Donations on the day welcome, All proceeds raised locally stay local and will help maintain local palliative care services which is free of charge to all who need it. Westport Flower Festival

Westport Flower Festival will be held in Holy Trinity Church from Friday July 10 until Sunday July 12 and will run from 11pm to 6pm each day. This historical church will be filled with blooms and arranged by both professional and amateur flower arrangers from the locality. Everyone is getting involved from local children planting old wellies and boots to creative individuals and local groups and families remembering their loved ones in memorial arrangements. There will be refreshments available throughout with delicious prizewinning homebakes thanks to the ladies in the parish. All of the funds raised will go towards the restoration work which is now being carried out on the church building. A grand opening will take place on Friday July 10 at 8pm and all are heartily invited. Art therapy course

Mayo Cancer Support Assocation is running an art therapy course commencing Tuesday July 7 in Ballina Family Resource Centre, and will run for four weeks on Tuesdays from 12 noon to 1pm. Anyone interested in participating contact Jean on (087 ) 2804164. 

Stewards and volunteers needed

Ballina Salmon Festival is looking for stewards and volunteers to dress up for Mardi Gras on Saturday July 11. For more details contact the festival office on (096 ) 79814.

Sean nos dancing workshop

A sean nos dancing workshop will start on Thursday July 9. Classes will take place between 2pm and 4pm. Go along and learn a few steps with Liam Scanlon who leads a fun filled two hour workshop for all ages. Beginners and advanced are welcome, the cost is €10 per person. Liam Lawton to play a concert in St Patrick’s Church, Ballina

The widely acclaimed award winning multi-platinum singer Liam Lawton is to play in St Patrick’s Church, Ballina, on Friday August 28. This summer performance will be a huge fundraising concert in aid of St Muredach’s Cathedral Restoration Fund and the Moy Valley Over 55 Club. Both groups are delighted to be organising such a prestigious event that is surely guaranteed to bring an enthused audience to St Patrick’s Church. Liam Lawton, a Catholic priest, working in the diocese of Kildare and Leighlin, south of Dublin, is widely acclaimed in the religious and musical scene nationally and internationally. His most famous compositions are performed at many religious ceremonies, such as ’The Clouds’ Veil’ and ‘Hiding Place’. Tickets are €20 and will be on sale in the offices of Moy Valley Resources IRD located above SuperValu on Bunree Road and in the Over 55 Club, Cathedral Road. Are you right there Michael?

Calling all Michaels and Michelles of the world. Come and join the fun 5km charity walk on the Castlebar Greenway and Lough Lannagh on Saturday July 18 at 5pm. Community fete

Cong Community Fete is looking for volunteers to help out on Saturday July 11. If you have a few hours to spare and would like to help out contact Miriam on (087 ) 2795126.

Killala Céilí

A céilí will be held in Killala Community Centre on Friday July 10. Matt Cunningham will perform from 10pm to 1am at the centre, where refreshments will be served to all in attendance.

Castlebar Summer Markets

Castlebar Summer Markets will run every Friday for the duration of the summer months at the tennis pavillion from 9am to 2pm. Go along and browse through the large selection of food arts and crafts. Beginners tennis in Claremorris

A five week tennis beginners course (beginners and returners to tennis ) in Claremorris will  start on  Wednesday July 8 and run for five weeks between 8.30pm and 9.30pm, with racquets and balls provided. Summer reading adventure

Public libraries in County Mayo, Castlebar, Ballina, Westport, Kiltimagh, Ballyhaunis, and Crossmolina are running a reading adventure for children from June 23 to the end of August. The Summer Reading Adventure is a free programme open to all children. Each child who registers for the adventure at his/her local library chooses books to read during the summer holidays. They will receive a summer reading card to record their progress along the way and a library reward stamp will be added to their reading card at the library after each book read. Children will be encouraged to continue reading throughout the adventure. The Summer Reading Adventure provides the whole family with an opportunity to explore the full range of events and facilities which are available from the library service: story time sessions, children’s activities, access to talking books and games, all the favourite movies, computers and internet access, and of course children’s books for all ages.

Ballyhaunis reunion

The Ballyhaunis Community School class of 1990 will hold a reunion on Saturday July 11 in Val's Bar on Main Street, Ballyhaunis, from 8.30pm. All past pupils are invited to attend this casual reunion.

Keel markets

The Keel Market will take place every Saturday from 10am to 1pm in Keel Hall in Achill, where the best of local produce will be on sale.

Charlestown Atheltic 50/50 draw

Last week's Charlestown Athletic FC 50/50 weekly draw which was held in Benson's Bar, Rooskey was won by Keelan Ward, c/o Benson's, winning €460. Martina Connolly was the winner of the €20 in-house draw. Next week's draw takes place today July 3 in Hayden's Bar, Charlestown.
