Learner driver crossed road in front of oncoming car

A learner driver who crossed into the path of an oncoming car, while he was attempting to turn right, was convicted for careless driving at Ballina District Court on Tuesday.

The accident occurred on November 10 2011 as Sean Mulligan, Carn, Garranard, Ballina, attempted to turn right off the main Ballina to Crossmolina road to a secondary road at Knockanillaun, Ballina. The learner driver, who was unaccompanied hit a car driven by John Gordon. Mr Gordon and his wife were brought to Mayo General Hospital. Damage caused to the car was €5,000.

Mulligan had misjudged the distance between his car and the oncoming car. The 19-year-old defendant has since passed his driving test and has no previous convictions.

Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined him €500 for careless driving.
