After more than a decade of fundraising in aid of cancer care in Mayo, the hugely successful Bright Eyes campaign has been brought to a close.

The work of the Bright Eyes committee culminated in the recent purchase of a state of the art MRI scanner for Mayo General Hospital.

The committee was first formed in response to the death of Angela Devaney at 25 years of age from cancer. Angela was the daughter of Michael and Norah Devaney. The fund was named in memory of Angela who was called ‘bright eyes’ by friends in view of her striking blue eyes.

Within two years, and after two campaigns, €50,000 had been raised for Mayo Roscommon Hospice. Inspired by this success, Bright Eyes began fundraising for the oncology department at Mayo General Hospital. The committee was able to purchase a breast ultrasound scanner, a CT scanner, and an MRI scanner.

The committee would like to thank the people of Mayo who responded so magnificently to the appeal. They also thank the local press and they would like to offer a sincere thank you to the manager of MGH, Charlie Meehan; Kevin Barry; Dr Mary Casey, and committee member, ward manager, Marie Mellett.

The committee recognises the assistance of Cancer Action Mayo in finalising the purchase of the MRI scanner.
