Weekend of events lined up for Lough Lannagh

Mayo County Council has announced the launch of an exciting public art programme landmark and a weekend of events at Lough Lannagh, Castlebar, from April 20 to April 22. The weekend involves a wide spectrum of activity including launches, music performances, light displays, workshops, tours, boat-trips, and talks at the picturesque lake setting in Castlebar.

One of the events taking place over the weekend is Across the Lough. The Performance corporation is an award-winning theatre company with a mission to "create daring performance adventures in surprising places". Celebrating its 10th year in 2012, the company has created groundbreaking site-specific work in Ireland, America, the UK, Finland, and Kenya.

The Performance Corporation has created an intimate theatrical experience that takes place out on the lough itself. In Across the Lough, an audience of just three people are ferried across the lake in a wooden rowing boat by a boatman/performer. During the performance he engages with the audience, offering stories, songs, and revelations about the challenges and opportunities of life, from youth to old age, to our final encounter with "the other side". The work is written by award-winning playwright Tom Swift and directed by critically acclaimed director Louise Lowe. There will be several performances each day. A wider audience will be able to engage with the performance by downloading a specially created ‘audio companion’ to Across the Lough and listening to it at home or on the shore. Mp3 players will be available during the landmark weekend for people to borrow to listen to the audio companion. www.theperformancecorporation.com The performances take place through out the weekend and are approx 15 to 20 mins long. The meeting point is at the pier on Lough Lannagh. Numbers for the performance are limited and booking is strictly required. Tickets are available from today, March 23. Contact Gaynor Seville on 094 9047561. The performances are free but are weather dependant and audience members should wear warm clothing and rainproof coats.
