Seventy per cent paid too much tax

Would you believe it? Premier Accounting and Book Keeping Service’s had a massive response to their article a few weeks ago entitled Are you Paying too much tax?

Of the people who called into them, approximately 70 per cent had paid too much tax in the last three years. Refunds ranged from €300 to €4,500, a nice cheque to receive in the run-up to the Christmas season.

Married couples in particular usually end up paying too much tax each year, mainly due to the fact that these days both spouses are working and therefore keep their tax credits for themselves. However, if you were to fill in a tax return annually, especially in cases where one spouse is earning substantially more than the other, you would probably find yourself in a refund situation.

Tax relief can be claimed on your bin charges, tuition fees for third-level colleges, rent, medical expenses, including gluten-free products purchased in a supermarket for coeliacs, hearing aids, IVF, hiring a private nurse in the case of a serious illness, physiotherapy, chiropody, speech and language therapy, etc.
