Excel 11 offers arts opportunities for young people in Mayo

Mayo County Council’s Excel 11 is a developmental programme of arts events for teenagers and young adults across county Mayo. The programme focuses on supporting and developing the skills of young people with specific arts interests, while also providing opportunities for young Mayo people to get involved in quality arts events during the month of November.

Annually the EXCEL Youth Arts Programme includes a number of open events. These events are open to anybody between the ages of 13 and 19 and are really popular. It is hoped this year’s open programme will offer challenging opportunities and fun in equal measure. The number of participants in each workshop is limited and to get involved you need to call the arts office and book your place to avoid disappointment. The number to call for more information and bookings is 094 9047558, or alternatively you can e-mail: [email protected].

On November 26 a youth bands advice clinic will be held in Ballina Arts Centre hosted by Steve Reddy from First Music Contact between 11am and 4pm. On the same day in Charlestown a traditional music workshop will be held in Charlestown Arts Centre between 11am and 2pm, where Zoe Conway will be the facilitator, all participants in this workshop will have to have at least two years’ experience in playing their instruments. The Mayo Artsquad will be hosting an open workshop in Castlebar on Monday November 28 from 5pm to 7.30pm, where young people can come along and get involved in a number of different art activities. On Friday November 28 a portfolio preparation advice seminar for art teachers will be held in the Mayo Education Centre from 2pm to 4pm. The panel will be headed by Ann Fitzsimmons, John Brady and John Mayock.
