Bealtaine arts festival to celebrate creative ageing

A series of events is taking place in Mayo throughout May to celebrate creativity and ageing for Bealtaine 2015.

Bealtaine is an annual festival, organised by Age and Opportunity, a national group which promotes positive ageing.

In Mayo, Bealtaine events include art workshops, drama, singing, movie screenings, crafts and exhibitions.

The Ballina Arts Centre is hosting two drawing workshops with local artist Val McLoughlin on May 13 and 20.

Author Timothy O’Grady will give a reading accompanied by renowned fiddle player Martin Hayes at the centre on May 21 while movie fans can enjoy a screening of The Quiet Man on May 29.

Westport Library is also holding a series of Bealtaine events including a creative writing workshop on May 20 with playwright Fiona Keane and a knitting workshop on May 21 with Westport Knitters.

In Castlebar, events include a free matinee screening of the film The Hundred-Foot Journey, starring Helen Mirren, on May 5 in the Linenhall Arts Centre and a showing of the acclaimed one-man-show Maeve’s House by Eamon Morrissey at the same venue on May 26.

A special exhibition, called The Art Room, made up of art work by residents from three care centres in Mayo - the Sacred Heart Hospital and Cuan Chaitriona Nursing Home, Castlebar, and St Attracta’s Nursing Home, Charlestown, opens in the Linenhall on May 29.
