Flooding concerns for councillors following downpour

A number of councillors expressed their concerns about flooding that occurred on Monday after the first heavy shower of rain of the winter. Fine Gael councillor Johnny O’Malley told the meeting: “I’m very concerned about the flooding in Newport today. There was a lot of money spent there recently and it has flooded again. I got a call at 10am this morning about this from a person and I spent a couple of hours trying to get in touch with someone in the council to get some pumps or something in, but I could not get anyone. At 1pm I went over there myself and I could see how bad it had got for the people, we need to have something done again on it.”

Cllr Gerry Ginty also informed the meeting that he came across serious flooding on his way from Ballina to Castlebar. “On my way here and between Knockmore and Pontoon there was some very bad flooding on the roads,” he said. “This problem could have been alleviated very quickly if the water tables were opened but that does not seem to be something that will happen.”
