€500 fine for man who let dog roam estate

A man who has previous dog control convictions and whose dog was caught roaming his neighbourhood was convicted and fined at this week’s sitting of Ballina District Court.

Martin Lackey, 101 Greenhills Estate, pleaded guilty to having his dog unaccompanied without a leash around the Greenhills Estate area.

Garda Petrina Devrey, received a call on August 13 at 11am this year that a large black dog was roaming the estate. Gda Devery was unable to contact the dog warden and while she restrained the dog the defendant approached her and explained that it was his dog.

Lackey said that he did not know how the dog had escaped from the secure back garden. The defendant who has two previous convictions for dog control was convicted and fined €500 by Judge Mary Devins but was warned that if he committs a similar offence that he will go to prison and an order will be made for the destruction of the dog.
