Jail for student who kicked nightclub doors

A man who was observed lashing at the doors of the TF Hotel nightclub in Castlebar was before the district court on Wednesday.

On January 21 2011 at 1.28am, Garda Luke Gray observed Kieran Cummins, 19 Meadow Close, Raheen, Limerick, kick at the doors of the TF nightclub. When Cummins observed the garda, he ran into the cafe bar of the hotel.

Security staff informed the garda that Cummins had been ejected from the hotel earlier that night for fighting inside. At 1.30am Cummins was again ejected by staff. The defendant, who was intoxicated, was threatening, and abusive.

The GMIT, Castlebar, business student has 19 previous convictions, which included a three month prison sentence, suspended for two years from the circuit court. As the circuit court was sitting in Castlebar, the defendant appeared before the circuit court judge where suspension was revoked. Cummins then returned to the district court where Judge Mary Devins sentenced him to 28 days in prison, concurrent to the three month circuit court sentence. The jail sentence will come into effect at the end of May after the defendant sits his college exams.
