Threats made against family member in ongoing feud

A member of the Travelling community who threatened to kill his cousin, due to an ongoing family feud, was before Castlebar District Court on Wednesday.

Garda Lydia Cawley outlined that on March 15, gardaí were informed that Bernie McDonagh, 63 Lakeview, Castlebar, alongside his two brothers, intended to cause harm to his cousin, who is also called Bernie McDonagh.

Gardaí told the three men, who were in an agitated state, to go home and when Garda Cawley spoke with McDonagh McDonagh said, “I will kill Bernie McDonagh when I see him... for what he did to my sister. I don’t care if I do time for it.” Garda Cawley believed that this threat would be carried out. McDonagh has previous convictions.

Judge Mary Devins remanded the defendant on continuing bail for sentencing to October 5 2011. If there is no further trouble between the two parties then the judge said that she will follow her own recommendations. The prosecution was given liberty to re-enter.
