Man drove after he drank fifteen pints

An unemployed plasterer, who consumed 15 pints over the course of a party and decided to drive home the following day, was this week disqualified from driving at Belmullet District Court.

On June 19 2009 Garda Sean McHale was on patrol in the Blacksod area when at 3pm he observed Anthony Togher, Elly, Clogher, Ballina, drive in the direction from Aughleim to Belmullet.

In the area of Newtown, Togher’s vehicle was observed to veer into the grass verge on the left hand side and after a series of bends he was stopped by Garda McHale.

Togher was arrested on the suspicion of drink driving and a subsequent breath sample given showed 71mg of alcohol per 100ml of breath.

Togher, who had no previous convictions and who lives at home with his elderly mother, told the court that he attended a party the night before and continued drinking the next day.

Judge Seamus Hughes convicted and fined him €200 and disqualified him from driving for three years.
