Carey calls for adequate broadband service in the Belmullet/Erris area

Fianna Fáil local election candidate Sean Carey has called for the provision of an adequate broadband service in the Belmullet/Erris area.

Speaking on the matter Carey said: "I have been out knocking on doors these past couple of months and the issue that comes up time and time again is the lack of a proper broadband service.

"Everything is online these days. People are expected to do their banking online, their farm applications online, pay their bills online and yet the broadband service is extremely poor; you can barely send an email in some parts of Mayo.

"In this day and age broadband is a necessity - homes, schools and businesses all need access to it. This Government has completely neglected rural Ireland. It is no surprise that Dublin and the commuter counties were all connected to high speed or fibre broadband years ago, while more rural counties like Mayo are left behind.

"This Government promised that every town and village in Ireland would have a proper broadband service by 2016. It is now 2019 and the Government’s rural broadband plan is nowhere to be seen,” he stated.

"This is completely unacceptable and needs to be addressed immediately. I and my Fianna Fáil colleagues will continue to advocate for an adequate broadband service for the people of Mayo and rural Ireland."
