€3.72 million for housing disability grants in Mayo

Mayo County Council is to receive over €3.72 million in housing grants for older people and people with a disability according to Fianna Fáil Senator John Carty.

The grants are provided under the Housing Adaptation Grant Schemes for Older People and People with a Disability to allow people with mobility issues to continue to live in their homes amongst their local communities.

The allocation to Mayo County Council is an increase of more than €944,000 on last year’s allocation.

Grants of up to €30,000 are available for people with a disability, and up to €10,500 for older people, for improvement works and extensions to facilitate their living arrangements. Among the works included in the scheme are the provision of level access showers, installation of stair lifts, grab rails, access ramps and other measures. Additionally the Mobility Aids Grant scheme is available to fast track grants of up to €6,000 to address the mobility problems of a member of a household.

Speaking about the funding Sen Carty said: “I’m delighted that even in these difficult economic times, significant funding is still being made available under this programme. By providing over €3.72 million to Mayo County Council, the Government is ensuring that many older people and people with disabilities in our community will have access to grants during the course of 2010.”
