Women protest outside council offices

Two women in the sixties staged a picket outside Mayo County Council offices this week — with one of them on a hunger strike — as they want the council to buy their home in Clareville, Claremorris.

Bridget Collins (67 ) and Christina Dunne (66 ) explained that they are now homeless and living in Dundalk since they vacated their home, which they purchased on the private market, in 2007. The women say there have been continuous issues with sewerage and heating problems in the house and as the developer has not fixed these issues they left their house and now want the council to buy it from them. The women have not pursued their grievances against the developer in the courts.

Ms Dunne said that she will stay on hunger strike and continue to protest as long as her health will allow her to.
