Safe and functioning water supply on the way for Downpatrick Head - Calleary

A fully functioning and safe water supply is on the way for residents in the Downpatrick Head area of Ballycastle, according to Mayo Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary, who said he has secured a commitment from the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Darragh O’Brien, to provide €353,000 for the provision of the Downpatrick Head Community Water Connection.

Deputy Calleary said: "Since the election in January 2020, I have been working in cooperation with the Downpatrick Head Community Water Connection Committee and Mayo County Council to finally get this scheme over the line.

"It has been in the pipeline for a number of years and I am very pleased to have now been given a commitment from Minister O’Brien that he is providing €353,000 so that 36 households can finally have a safe water supply in their homes,” explained Deputy Calleary.

He continued: "€243,000 had been allocated in 2019 but this fell short of what was required – after intensive talks and negotiation with the Minister and his Department I am delighted that a further €110,000 has now been secured to ensure the pipes can soon start flowing with a clean drinking water supply for the residents of Downpatrick Head.

"I want to thank them for their patience and cooperation over the past number of months as we worked to secure the project. I, like them, now look forward to the necessary works being carried out swiftly so that these families can enjoy a basic right to clean water supply."
