Duffy calls for stream to be covered over in estate

Ballina councillor Mark Duffy has called on Mayo County Council to cover over an open section of a stream located at the green area of the Moyvale housing estate in the town.

The independent councillor put forward a notice of motion on the issue at the April meeting of the Ballina Municipal District, looking for the works to be done. Speaking on the motion he said it was quite dangerous for children, in particular, who are out playing. He was supported by Fianna Fáil councillor Annie May Reape. Responding to Cllr Duffy's motion in a written reply, Orla Burke, executive engineer for Mayo County Council, said: "The lands in question remain in the ownership of the developer. The stream bounds the estate, the residents may wish to consider installing a fence or railing along a section of the stream with the landowner."
