In the Deep Blue Sea

This event is a junior workshop for children under six accompanied by an adult.

Explore the museum’s fishing exhibition through rhythm, percussion and composition with musician Mary Curran. The workshop will take place on Wednesday April 22 from 4pm to 5pm.

Old style wood turning

This event for adults and children over seven. Go along to this talk and demonstration on woodturning with Máirtín Dáibhi O’Coisdealbha and learn about the simplicity of working with native wood. The event will take place on Saturday April 26 from 2.30pm to 4pm.

History and appreciation of the Súgan chair

This day course is for adults only. Learn more about the origins and design of the “Bottomed” or Súgan chair as we focus on an often overlooked piece of traditional Irish furniture with Pat Broderick. It will take place on Tuesday April 28 from 10am to 5pm.

May Day talk

Join Dr Patricia Lysaght, Professor of Irish Folklore, to hear about the beliefs and customs associated with May Day. This event is for adults only and will take place on Thursday April 30 from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.

Schools workshops

Water divining

On Thursday April 23 at 10am and 11.30am, you can join Austin McTiernan, Water Diviner, to find out about water divining. Afterwards explore the grounds to find underground water and other aspects of divining. This workshop is aimed at fifth and sixth class students and junior and senior cycle history, geography, and science post primary school students.

Common Threads: An Exhibition of Fabric Art

An exhibition of fabric craft made by eight women of different nationalities now living in Mayo. This exhibition consists of a stunning range of work which is the result of a joint project undertaken by the National Museum of Ireland — Country Life and Mayo Inter-cultural Action group (MIA ), and facilitated by community artist Carmel Balfe.
