There was lots of exciting play around the courses in Mayo last weekend with some big prizes handed out.

Balla

It was Lady Captain's Day last weekend in Balla (Maureen McDonnell ). The winner was Breege Moran with a score of 109, second place went to Kay Foy, two strokes behind. The gross prize was won by Breege Jennings with Geraldine Evans coming home in third place and Marian Gormally in fourth spot. The category winners were Julie Loftus, Patricia Conwell, Mary Jo Cannon and Pat Dillon. The first 18-holes was won by Margaret Forkan with a score of 55 and the second nine by Carmel Costello. The visitors prize was won by Mary Morrin with Breege Kelly finishing in second place. The mens competition was won by Matt Leonard with a score of 53, second place went to John Parsons, the gross prize to Lorcan Cribben, third place to Bob Leggett and fourth was claimed by Paul Galvin. The scramble was won by the trio of Lorcan Cribben, Mary B O'Donnell, and Gus Heraty, second place went to Ronan Mahon, Pauline O'Connor and James Waldron and third place was won by the pairing of Derek Reilly and Ann Marie Doherty.

Ballinrobe

The ladies winner of the Friday open competition was Sheila Molloy, with a score of 33pts, the qualifier, Fionnuala Breathnach, with a score of 33pts. The gents winner was Tom Lydon, with a score of 42 pts, the gross winner was Niall Staunton, with a score of 34 gross points, the qualifiers were Tom Treacy and Denis Maher. The ladies single hole stableford competition was won by Louise Cribben 38pts, Mary Daly finished in second with Agnes O'Connor in third and Anne Galvin in fourth spot. The front nine win went to Beatrice Shalks and the back nine to Anne Galvin. The gents weekend competition was won by Denis Murphy with a score of 40pts, Martin Forde finished in second place, the gross prize was won by Michael Lee, with the category prizes going to Fergal Horgan, Chris Quinlivan and David Fahy. The front nine was won by Gary O'Shaughnessy and the back nine by Michael Clesham.

Cáirde Mhaigheo golf classic

The 2019 Cáirde Mhaigheo golf classic takes place in Ballinrobe Golf Club on Friday, July 26 and Saturday, July 27. Teams of four cost €200. Prizes on offer over the weekend include, All Ireland final tickets, hotel stays, vouchers, Mayo merchandise and more. Castlebar Ladies

It was day one of the Lady Captain Day's competition 18 hole stroke competition - the winner on day one was Edel Burke with a round of 67, Mary Lawlor finished in second place one stroke back and third place went to Marian Martyn, a stroke further behind. The rest of the top ten was made up by Breta Fitzmaurice, Amy Healy, Carmel Moran, Teresa Mannion, Angela Grogan, Cora Mulroy and Frances O'Dowd. The midweek stableford competition was won by Cathy Craughwell with a score of 42pts, Finola Lynn finished in second place a point back, third place went to Marie Rowley and fourth spot went to Margaret Tighe. The club nine hole qualifying stableford competition was won by Nuala McGowan with a score of 20pts and second place went to Dympna Smyth.

Claremorris

Nancy McHugh was the winner of the ladies' competition last weekend with a score of 36pts, second place went to Florrie Campbell, a point further behind. The nine hole competition was won by Catherine McEveney with a score of 19pts, Noreen Curley finished in second place on count back. The category winner was Eileen O'Donovan with a score of 31pts. The gents' 18 hole competition was won by Martin Devaney with a score of 40pts, the category winners were David Burke, Peter Coen, Cathal Hennelly and Paul Cannaughton. The birdie pool winners were Ronan Gurran, Martin Devaney, Peter Coen, Philip White and Eoin Prendregast.

Mulranny

The gents stableford competition was won by John Feeney with 43pts. In-form Tim Crowley was second with 42pts while Mick O’Donnell took third place on 41pts, with Andrew Forde in fourth spot on 40pts. Martin McLaughlin and Tim Crowley recently won the Holpatrick Cup qualifier with a great score of 46pts and just edged out Michael Joyce and Martin Moylan on 45pts. This means that Tim and Martin will represent Mulranny in the Connaught/Ulster qualifier (road to St Andrews ) in Ballinasloe. Entries are now being taken for the President’s Day on Sunday week, July 28. The family of the late President, Tom McHale, will host the day and a large turnout is expected to honour his memory. The usual AM and PM draws will be made. For this weekend’s stroke competition you may play on Friday or Sunday. Lady President Ann Hyland will host her Lady President's Day on Saturday, a nine hole competition for men will get underway at 3pm.

Swinford

It was Lady Captain's Day (Anne Prendergast ) in Swinford last weekend. The winner was Breege Spain with a score of 69, Catherine Loftus finished in second place three strokes back and Annie McNeela finished in third place also after a round of 72. The gents' competition was won by Luke O'Malley with a round of 63, John Sheehan finished in second place a stroke back and Sean Comer finished in third place. The scramble was won by the trio of Mary Doyle, Margaret McNicholas and Brian Gallagher.

Western Care Cáirde Crann Mór

Cáirde Crann Mór, Ballinrobe, are holding the Seamus Langan Perpetual Golf Competition in Ballinrobe Golf Club on Thursday, July 25 in support of Western Care Association local services. The format is a singles stableford competition open to ladies and gents. The overall prize open to ladies and gents will be a 'Premiership Weekend For Two People' that will include premium tickets to an Arsenal FC home Premier League match of your choice at The Emirates Stadium during the 2019/2020 season, that includes two nights accommodation, B&B, plus many more valuable prizes such as beautiful pieces of crystal. There will also be valuable prizes on offer for ladies and gents first, second, gross, third and nearest the pin competitions as well as a monster raffle. Tee times are available from 8am to 5pm; entry costs €20 per person and €10 for Ballinrobe Golf Club members. Booking is available from Ballinrobe Golf Club on 094 9541118.
