New season on the road gets back into gear

Western Lakes

Five Western Lakes riders were in action in the Weller Cup race in Bohermeen, County Meath, on Sunday. In the Senior A and B category race Willie Connelly, Mark Quigley, and Padraig Marrey were in action with the Marrey finishing a superb third on the day. Also on Sunday, Joe Marrey and John Murphy finished well in the main group in the Senior C race. In the youths’ race Western Lakes club member Brendan Scullion took part in the under 16 category which acted as one of the qualifiers for the Youth Olympics. Scullion rode well throughout and finished safely in the pack on the day. Next weekend the action switches back to Mayo on Sunday with a big entry list expected for the Mayo League Race in Partry.

Mizen to Malin Bid - Western Lakes CC riders make squad

A total of 11 riders from the club are now on the squad attempting to break 20hrs barrier for the 590kms of non stop cycle from Mizen Head to Malin Head. The total squad has 23 riders which highlights the superb representation from the Western Lakes club. Most of the 11 riders only took up the sport in the last 18 months which shows how fast they have progressed. The group have a tough training regime to follow over the next three months, so here is hoping they all make it. The cyclists who have done the club proud to gain selection are Mary Mulchrone, Gerard Kyne, Constance Bartels, John Murphy, Bernard Gereathy, Joseph Marrey, Michael Moran, John Conroy, Padraig Gannon, Gabriel Coen, and Padraig Marrey.

Mayo League

The first round of the Mayo league starts on Sunday April 5. It is an open handicap event over 30 miles of the Srah circuit, sign on from 10am at the Partry hall, race starts at Srah school at 10.30am.

The eagerly awaited club league promoted by both Western Lakes CC and Covey Wheelers will take place on April 16 with a 10 mile Time Trial. This league is open to all abilities and genders, even youth riders get to race against their senior counterparts. The league runs on a h/cap/personal best basis so everyone has a chance of winning either on the night or overall. See club website for updates, link is on the top of the page.

Sign on and full league payment will take place from 6pm outside the graveyard on the Ballyglass road, Ballinrobe. First rider off at 7pm sharp, refreshments afterwards at Inch’s bar Main St.
