Vollyball: National League

Mayo Volleyball Club got their season opener off to a great start with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over Dalkey Devils in The Sports hall in St. Louis school Kiltimagh last weekend.

The home side suffered an early onslaught as the south Dublin outfit built up a 10-5 lead. After Mayo regained their composure and pulled the game level there was much tit for tat scoring as the sides drew level on six separate occasions.

At the end of the set Mayo narrowly won the set 25-23.From here on it was onward an upward for the Westerners as they made many defensive switches and Dalkey found it hard to score against Mayo's determined defence.

Mayo ran out 25-14 winners. With two sets down the Dalkey ladies struggled for composure as the red and green built up a commanding 14-1 lead.

Despite a late rally by the away side Mayo eventually won the set 25-15 and the match 3-0. Mayo's next league match is away against Cork at noon on Saturday.

After the match Mikal O'Boyle said: "We are delighted to get our first game in the National Division One season off to victory. We had a rough start but when we got into rhythm everything just clicked for us. Lets hope we can build on this victory in the weeks ahead."
