Mustangs trample over Leitrim ladies;

Basketball; Mustangs 58 Mohill 36

Mustangs travelled away to their first match of the new season last Saturday evening to Mohill in Leitrim.

Despite their undefeated run in the league last year, Mustangs showed due respect to the fourth placed team from last season, Mohill. Lorna Moran won the tip off for Mustangs but there was a lot of running before the first score came in the game.

Player-coach Siobhan Kilkenny did not renege on her ability to lead from the front and she had scored six of the Mustangs ten points at the end of the first quarter when they trailed the home side by the smallest of margins on 11-10pts.

The second period of play saw Mustangs outscore Mohill by 22-9 and it was veteran Sheila Cunningham, who hit a big three pointer at the beginning of the second quarter to put Mustangs ahead, a lead they never lost for the remainder of the game.

The second and third quarter saw Ciara Griffin break the Mohill spirit with consecutive baskets from fast breaks, while sister Niamh was frequenting the free throw line, racking up scores for the travelling Mustang side.

But overall this was a real team effort with everybody sharing minutes and indeed nine of the 12 players getting points on the scoresheet. The closing two baskets of the game came from newcomers Indre Majauskaite-Gusciuviene and Tanya Flynn, with a steal, followed by a full court lay-ups.

Mustangs’ next league game is at home on Tuesday October 30 in De la Salle at 8.15pm against Boyle ladies. All support is greatly appreciated.
