Ballinasloe waste plant to be raised in Brussels

Independent MEP, Marian Harkin is to investigate if European Union regulations have been adhered to in relation to the waste facility planned for Poolboy, Ballinasloe.

Following a meeting with representatives of the ‘Ballinasloe Says No’ campaign and a visit to the site of the proposed Waste processing project, she expressed surprise at its location.

“My concern, having regard to the site’s location adjacent to a flood plain, and possible threat to the waters of the River Suck, is whether due process has been fully followed in determining the suitability of this site for waste processing,” she said.

Ms Harkin was particularly concerned to examine if due significance had been given to the objectives of the region’s upcoming River Basin Programme, which was overdue for submission to the European Commission.

“I will be raising a number of issues in Brussels including possible damage arising from any breach of the existing closed landfill with consequent leaching of pollutants to the environment, including the area’s water courses,” she commented.
