Cooney’s Pharmacy hosts National Diabetes Awareness event

Diabetes Ireland, in partnership with healthcare company MSD, hosted two dedicated diabetes awareness days this month in Cooney’s Pharmacies in Moate and in The Crescent, Athlone.

The events were part of a national diabetes roadshow taking place in 20 locations across the country. The Westmeath awareness days were open to members of the public and involved Diabetes Ireland professionals offering free risk assessment and screenings for attendees, as well as advice and information on the risk factors, symptoms, management,  and treatment of Type 2 diabetes.

It is estimated that there are currently 225,840 people living with diabetes in Ireland, and that by 2030 there will be 278,850 people with the condition. Type 2 diabetes usually develops slowly in adulthood. It is progressive and can sometimes be treated with diet and exercise, but more often may require anti-diabetic medicine and/or insulin injections.

Speaking at the official launch of the roadshow, pharmacist Denis Cooney said: “We were delighted to host the diabetes awareness day in our pharmacy as part of the national roadshow and we would like to thank Diabetes Ireland and MSD for partnering with us. It was great to see both existing and new customers using the opportunity to ask questions, get advice, and gather information in order to understand more about Type 2 diabetes.”
