Skinchecker campaign urges people to check their moles

As melanoma cases continue to rise, La Roche-Posay and awareness campaign Skinchecker are urging people to check their moles.

An exclusive study carried out by Ipsos for La Roche-Posay in 23 countries looks into the different attitudes to the sun and knowledge of the risks associated with exposure.

In Ireland the survey revealed that while 92 per cent of respondents understood exposure to the sun can cause health problems, only 13 per cent protected their skin all year round, whatever the season. Only 5 per cent have their moles checked by a dermatologist at least once a year, and only 30 per cent have been checking their own moles annually.

La Roche-Posay, a proud supporter of the Irish Cancer Society, has launched Skinchecker, a new viral awareness campaign which aims to educate people about their active role in the early detection of skin cancer. The campaign encourages the public to become ‘skin checkers’ for themselves and their nearest and dearest, by keeping a close eye on moles and seeing a GP if there is any cause for concern.

Skin cancer is the only type of cancer visible to the naked eye and, if diagnosed early enough, 90 per cent of melanoma cases can be treated effectively.

Rosemary Scott of the Irish Cancer Society says: “We are delighted to support this campaign and believe that it can make a real difference in the fight against skin cancer - a fight which starts by taking a good look at ourselves and the ones we love.”
