GROW to host mental wellbeing and suicide prevention talks in Athlone

A series of five information evenings entitled Gatekeepers: Community Mental Health Promotion Programme will be taking place in Athlone during October and November starting on Thursday October 17 at 7.30pm.

The talks aim to raise awareness about mental wellbeing in the community. Each evening will cover a different topic related to positive mental health with talks from guest speakers. The talks will take place on Thursday evenings from 7.30-9.30pm in the Prince of Wales Hotel, Athlone. All talks are free and open to the general public. The Gatekeepers programme is being hosted by GROW in Ireland in partnership with the HSE.

A variety of topics will be covered over the five week programme. Topics covered will include understanding and promoting positive mental health; stress management; skills for coping with life’s pressures and worries; suicide awareness and prevention; WRAP/bereavement; and addiction/ nutrition.

Each evening will have a guest speaker from the HSE or a voluntary organisation based in the Midlands to offer their expertise on a given topic.

The aim of the Gatekeepers programme is to inform the general public about the topic of mental health, its role in suicide prevention, and provide information about relevant support services in the area.

It is hoped at the end of the five weeks that all attendees will have a better understanding of mental health and a good overall knowledge of the services in the area. No advanced bookings are required. Just come along. A certificate of attendance will be presented on week five of the course and there will be an additional certificate for week six, SafeTALK training issued by the HSE.
