Roscommon Minors bidding for three-in-a-row

Connacht MFC Final (Sunday, 12pm, Castlebar)

Roscommon’s minor footballers may have been handed the underdogs tag ahead of Sunday’s provincial decider against Mayo but despite that I feel they are in with a great shout of completing the three in a row.

Home advantage is a plus for the Mayo side who saw off the challenge of a fancied Galway side after extra time in their semi-final. Yet Fergal O’Donnell has worked wonders with Roscommon minor teams in recent years and the Rossies will be hoping the ‘Fergie factor’ will inspire their youngsters to glory.

Roscommon have no shortage of talent in their ranks and will be looking for big performances from the likes of team captain Ronan Daly; Clann na Gael’s Martin Flannery and Ultan Harney; Cathal Compton; and Strokestown duo Diarmuid McGann and David Neary.

Mayo will be full of confidence following their surprise win over Galway and Roscommon will have to bring their A game if they are to complete the treble and set up a quarter-final showdown with neighbours Westmeath. Kildare await the losers.
