Rural broadband for all under Government plan

Rural areas of Westmeath are to benefit from a minimum of 30mbps of broadband under the National Broadband Plan. That’s according to a representative of the Department of Communications who gave a presentation to members of Westmeath County Council last week.

Sean Griffin outlined plans to deliver high speed broadband, a priority under the Progamme for Government and under European guidelines, which include the delivery of basic broadband to all by 2013, and speeds of 30mbps to be available to all by 2020.

Mr Griffin explained that under the National Broadband Plan, the Government plans to deliver 70-100mbps to at least 50 per cent of the population, at least 40mbps to a further 20 per cent of the population, and a minimum of 30mbps to all, irrespective of location.

The rollout, which is estimated to cost in the region of €350m, is to be co-funded by the private sector.
