Insulation innovation

Campion Homes has recently introduced to the building industry their Insulated Concrete Panel building system (ICP ). The product was launched at The Building Exhibition in the RDS in September and received the Overall Best Product of the show award beating competition from timber frame systems, ICF systems, metal frame, and standard block construction. This award is judged by a panel of independent architects and engineers which is testament in itself to the quality of the product.

Having seen the standard of onsite construction being carried out on new houses today eg blocks were not laid plumb or level, insulation was not fitted tight to the inner leaf, and in some cases not even fitted at all, Liam Campion decided to design an insulated concrete panel system. The Campion Homes building system has 185mm of high density insulation sandwiched between two layers of reinforced concrete giving a u – value of 0.18. This ensures that there is little or no heat lost through the wall, which now acts as a heat store as the heat cannot escape. This stored heat is then slowly released back into the room as the room temperature decreases. Liam makes the point that, “it is expensive enough to heat a house without that heat being lost through the walls. With the Campion Homes system we can now trap the heat that the home owner is paying for, which in turn leads to lower fuel bills, something which we all want in these times of high fuel costs”.

The insulated wall panels are constructed of a 35mm outer reinforced concrete skin, 185mm of high density polystyrene insulation and a 100mm reinforced inner structural wall giving a total wall thickness of 320mm. The outer surface is scratch coated to receive the clients preferred choice of finish, eg plaster, dash, bricks, stone, etc. The structural inner leaf which supports the floor slabs has electrical socket boxes, switches, and conduit pre fitted into the panel. A structured cabling system can also be fitted to provide for the latest in data, communication and entertainment systems and to future-proof the home for other technologies in time to come.

The benefits of using the Campion Product are as follows: -

Insulation – According to the insulation industry, for insulation to work properly it must be fitted tight to the inner wall. The insulation in the Campion Homes system is fitted tightly between two layers of concrete in a sandwich panel.

Speed of erection – The speed of erection of the Campion System cannot be equalled by any other construction process that is on offer at this time. The shell of an average two storey house can be erected from a green field site in one week - including the foundations! They can also erect the shell of the average sized house from the floor level to roof level in two days.

Electrics – The socket and switch boxes are pre-set into the internal walls to the customer’s requirements. Conduit is also placed from socket to socket which makes the addition of extra sockets at a later date very easy indeed.

Concrete floors throughout – Concrete floors do not warp, twist, or rot. Concrete has a greater fire resistance and is non – combustible. Concrete is a far superior material for soundproofing your property. Concrete’s ability to absorb and store heat produces a more comfortable environment, avoiding unwanted temperature swings. Modern, well-insulated concrete homes are highly energy efficient, making a positive contribution to the challenge of climate change and minimising the effects on the built environment.

Quality and accuracy – The panels are manufactured in a controlled factory environment. This enables quality controls of the highest standards. All walls are flat, true, and plumb.

The Campion Homes Insulated Concrete Panel system is ideally suited to developers, builders and the self build industry due to the speed of erection and quality of workmanship.
