Just nine weeks to get ready for Athlone Half Marathon

Are you looking for a new challenge? Looking to get fit? Or are you gearing up for the Dublin Marathon at the end of October?

The inaugural Athlone Half Marathon which will take place on Saturday September 15 could be just what you’re looking for.

The event has been planned by a group of athletes in the town looking to establish a running event in the Midlands as big as triAthlone.

Speaking to the Advertiser, organiser David Serry said, “A lot of people are out there running 5km and 10km races, this is a chance for them to step it up. We have three training programmes on the website for beginners, intermediate, and advanced. It’s a very achievable race if you follow the plans.”

The race starts at St Aloysius College and will take you along the banks of the River Shannon out to Clonown before you turn and return in the Ballinasloe Road back to Athlone. With a total elevation gain of just 79 metres it’s the flattest half marathon around, and that’s why it’s called the‘Flatline’. If you’re looking to achieve a personal best time then this is the race for you, clocking 13 miles/22.1km.

Online registration is €20 and can be found at www.runireland.com/events/athlone-half-marathon registration on the day is €25. Registration gets you race entry, a timing chip, technical t-shirt, finishers medals, water stations on the route, and shower facilities after the race.

For the more serious runners there will be pacers lined up for the following finishing times: 1:30, 1:45, and 2 hours

Scheduled for September 15 the race is six weeks before the Dublin Marathon in October and three weeks before the Athlone 3/4 Marathon so this race will fit perfectly for anybody training for the Dublin Marathon.
