All-Ireland crown for Mullingar’s Robbie McCarthy

Robbie McCarthy created his own bit of history by becoming the first Westmeath handballer to win the All-Ireland softball crown.

Considering his opponent, Dublin’s Eoin Kennedy, was chasing an eight-in-a-row of titles adds extra merit to Robbie’s magnificent achievement. A packed Longford gallery were treated to a wonderful exhibition of handball.

McCarthy bagged an action-packed opening game on a score of 21-19. Robbie took a commanding lead in the second game but had to withstand a determined fightback from the reigning champ who cut the deficit to 13-16.

The Mullingar maestro took control again and collected his first ever senior softball title on a 21-13 scoreline. It has been a memorable year for the talented Mullingar man who has already gained the Irish 40x20 national title as well as the All-Ireland senior hardball title.
