Local Heroes bring music to Suede Bar

Hot on the heels of successful events in April and June, the next Local Heroes music night takes place in Suede Bar Athlone next Friday August 26.

Designed to give local singers, songwriters, and bands a platform to bring their music to local audiences, Local Heroes is a live music event held every two months, consisting of two stages and 10 bands per night.

Suede late bar in Athlone is hosting the event for the first time next Friday, and the line-up includes Declan Ryan, Ronan Burke, Athlone native Brendan Coyle, Milan Jay from Ballinasloe, Andrew Cullen, Naughty Polly, The Orsons, Breaking Circles who hail from Ballymahon, and local Athlone band Driftwood Manor.

Organiser Barry Masterson says the idea behind the nights is to offer support to local bands.

“The idea is to support the bands and to draw in a crowd who like music, and to bring new music to them. We want to showcase new songwriters and talents, and also get the bands to meet each other,” he explains.

“Depending on the success, we will keep running the Local Heroes nights as long as we can.”

Barry and fellow organisers Helge Wehder and Johnny Callaghan felt there was a need for a new way to bring local musicians together.

“The open mic nights in Suede and the Castle Inn are great, but there is no dedicated music venue in Athlone, so it is great to organise this. We need more venues in the Midlands,” he adds.

Catch all these great local acts and more at Suede Bar Athlone next Friday August 26. Admission is €6 and allows you entry to both floors and all 10 bands.
