Mullingar studio offers new arts experience to schoolkids

Schools from around the Midlands are invited to look at the Paintworks Studio in Mullingar if planning a school tour with a difference, where pupils can paint, glaze and fire pottery, as well as indulge in papier-maché and soap-making.

“We are the Midlands’ only studio where you get the opportunity to paint your own pottery,” said proprietor, Ronan Leavy.

“Visitors get to select their preferred piece of pottery, choose their colours and unleash their creativity,” continued artist-in-residence, Ronan.

Once each piece is painted it can be glazed by the customer or given to the studio craftsman for glazing. It will then be loaded in the kiln and fired to a very hot 1,000°C. Each masterpiece will be ready for collection a couple of days later.

As well as pottery painting, Paintworks Studio also has a new arts system called Decopatch - a papier-maché process with decorative papers used to cover everything from letters, numbers, and picture frames to trinket boxes and animal ornaments.

The studio also make soaps here with a hands-on approach to creating your own soapbars, bath bombs, scented bags and other creative scented products for your bathroom, any of which will make an ideal keepsake to commemorate your day out in Mullingar, or present for the upcoming Mothers’ Day.

The Paintworks Studio has a seating capacity of 42 and is centrally located on the main street close to Dublin Bridge in Mullingar town.

The town park is just a minute away with playground activities for all ages, and offers an ideal picnic opportunity for an al fresco lunch on the good days.

”With our starting fee per person for the school tour only €12, this could be a great way to see a new creative side for all and provide a new outlook to crafts in general,” said Ronan.

“We would be delighted to welcome you and your pupils to join us in 2011 for a very enjoyable school tour experience,” he concluded.
