Probation Act after shoplifting Christmas groceries

A woman who panicked when her mother lost her purse admitted leaving the shop without paying for hundreds of euro worth of goods.

Caroline Ward of 2 Ard na Casa, Longford Town, pleaded guilty to shoplifting at Buckley’s SuperValu, Mullingar on December 11 last and was given the benefit of the Probation Act at Mullingar District Court recently.

The court heard she left with a number of boxes of goods totalling €223.42 but the items were recovered.

Ms Patricia Cronin described her 19-year-old client as a young, single woman who came to Mullingr with her mother.

When her mother lost her purse containing a sum of money to pay for the Christmas shopping, Ward panicked and walked out of the shop.

She wanted to apologise for her actions.

Noting her plea of guilty and her age, Judge David Anderson gave her the benefit of the Probation Act.
