New coalition strikes deal to take control of Roscommon County Council

Hospital issue to fore of new alliance

A new coalition group confirmed on Wednesday this week that it has reached an agreement that will see it take control of Roscommon County Council.

The new coalition includes Fine Gael councillors, the Hospital Action Committee’s Cllrs Paula McNamara and Valerie Byrne, Independent Cllr Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan, and Sinn Fein’s Cllr Michael Mulligan.

The group, which has brought together councillors with a diverse range of views, has been formed in direct response to the Government’s plans to remove accident and emergency and surgical services from Roscommon County Hospital.

The group is determined to send a clear message to the Government that it will not tolerate the transfer of services from Roscommon County Hospital, as they say it will inevitably result in the unnecessary loss of life when patients have to be transferred to University College Hospital Galway.
