Garrycastle savoured Westmeath Division 1 LGFA Féile success this past weekend, each member of the Under 15 playing squad making a contribution to the club’s merited competition victory.

On the opening day of competition, Garrycastle topped their group with wins against Killucan and Ballycomoyle. A semi-final with St. Lomans was the final game on Saturday with Garrycastle achieving victory on a scoreline of 3-05 to 0-02.

All roads led to Rochfortbridge on Sunday where the girls met a very strong Cill Óige team. A very close game ended with a 4-07 to 1-04 win for Garrycastle, final scorers being Ella Sweeney (1-03 ), Amelie Henson (2-0 ), Erin McHugh (1-02, 2f ), Hannah Ganly (0-02 ).

Under-10 Girls

On Wednesday evening the Under-10 girls had their first blitz of the season when they hosted their friends and neighbours from Athlone GAA Club. Garrycastle had three teams participating with many of the girls playing their first U10 blitz. Great skill and determination was on display by all and we are looking forward to a great season ahead. Many thanks to “Wykes Landscaping” for sponsoring the Under-10 Girls team with a new set of jerseys.

Under-14 Girls

Garrycastle had their first outing in the u14 league last Thursday night vs The Downs. For many of these girls it was their first time playing on the full-size pitch and against a good Downs team, they put in a superb performance to run out convincing winners in the end.

Under-16 Girls

Garrycastle 4-09, St. Lomans 6-10

A very good Garrycastle performance in their first league match against the competition favourites. Despite playing well, the girls went in at half time trailing by 5-04 to 1-04 with the bulk of the St. Lomans scores coming in a five minute spell.

Garrycastle were on top for much of the second half and had they taken their chances they could well have won the game, with the woodwork denying them on five separate occasions.

Overall, a very encouraging performance to start the campaign. Unfortunately, there were a couple of injuries sustained by St. Lomans players during the game and everyone wishes the players involved a speedy recovery.

Garrycastle: Siobhan Ni Chluaid, Libby McHugh, Cadhla Kelly, Orla Turner, Jane Byrne, Rebecca Sleator, Rionagh Costello, Aislinn Kelly (0-4, 1f ), Amelie Henson (2-0 ), Eve Murphy, Hannah Murray, Hannah Ganly, Mandisa Ni Chluaid (0-1 ), Erin McHugh (1-3, 1f ), Ella Sweeney (0-1 ). Subs (all used ): Ellen Parker, Amy Carter, Alanna Gaffey, Roisin Ni Chluaid, Wiktoria Wziatek (1-0 ).

Nursery welcomes Sam Maguire

Sam Maguire paid a surprise visit to meet the club’s future all stars on Sunday morning. Both young and old were excited when given the opportunity to hold such a prestigious trophy. It was truly a day to remember.
