Athlone Town set to play Sligo Rovers in Sports Direct Women’s FAI Cup semi-final

A repeat of the 2022 Women’s FAI Cup remains a strong possibility following the draw for the semi-final stage of the competition on Tuesday afternoon.

Fresh from their penalty shootout heroics over league leaders Peamount United on Saturday night in Lissywollen, Athlone Town will make the journey north west to play Sligo Rovers in an enticing semi-final fixture.

Finalists in 2022, Athlone will be hoping to return to the final and have a prime opportunity of doing so, the most recent meeting between Ciaran Kilduff’s charges and Sligo Rovers resulting in a deserved 2-0 win for the Town.

Athlone Town custodian, Katie Keane, proved the hero of the quarter final occasion on Saturday night when her penalty shootout save earned her team a place in the final four of this year’s competition.

The second semi-final pits holders Shelbourne against Shamrock Rovers, both ties to be played on the weekend of October 14.

Meanwhile, Athlone Town return to league action on Saturday, September 30, when they travel south to play Cork City in Turners Cross, the game kicking off at 5pm.
