DPD Ireland has completed the installation of a rooftop solar PV array at its central sortation hub in Athlone, which will generate 1.3 MW of electricity each year.

The parcel delivery company partnered with Waterford-based renewable energy solutions provider Enerpower to install the 512 leapton solar PV panels.

The solar panels will provide 11 percent of the hub’s electricity demands, delivering an emissions reduction of 49,326kg of CO2 annually. The CO2 savings are the equivalent savings of 18000 litres of diesel or 231,000km driven by the average car.

The 66,000 sq ft hub employs over 600 staff and processes over 100,000 parcels on a nightly basis.

DPD Ireland CIO Colin Kennedy said the company was delighted to reinforce its commitment to becoming Ireland's leading parcel company in sustainable delivery with the installation of solar panels.

“This rooftop solar array is a testament to our dedication to sustainability and our proactive approach towards reducing our carbon footprint. We are proud to partner with Enerpower, whose expertise and commitment to renewable energy have been instrumental in making this project a success.

"The solar initiative is just one of the many steps that DPD Ireland has taken towards a more sustainable future. We are making great strides towards a greener future as we press on with our commitment to decarbonise our network. By the end of this year, we will have deployed 200 electric vans to our depots, marking a significant milestone in our journey towards sustainability," Mr Kennedy stated.

By the end of the year, all of DPD Ireland’s linehaul routes will be fueled by HVO, further aiding their journey towards a more environmentally friendly network. These collective efforts are propelling the company towards a cleaner and more environmentally conscious operation.
