Southern Gaels commence historic camogie league campaign with Cullion fixture

Southern Gaels commenced their historic camogie league campaign with a home fixture against Cullion this week, the first adult camogie team from Athlone to compete at such a level since Garrycastle fielded a team in the 1980s.

Their opening fixture will be followed by a game away to St Brigids in the second round of the competition on May 3 with the top two teams progressing to the next stage.

Best of luck to mentors Gearóid ODuibhir and Eoin Crosbie and the panel of girls. Anyone wishing to play camogie at any level can contact Gearóid at 087 2343636.

County Teams

Last weekend was a busy one for Southern Gaels on the county front. Congratulations to Sean Dowd who helped Roscommon to win the National Hurling League Division Three title. Also, to Chulainn Dowd who helped the Roscommon Under 20 side to an easy win over Tyrone in their first round championship clash. Both brothers recently transferred to Roscommon having previously represented Westmeath at all levels from Under 14 to Under 20.

Manager of the side is former Southern Gaels player Seamus Qualter. Seamus, who is in his second stint as manager of Rscommon, previously guided Westmeath to Christy Ring Cup success.

Cian McCarthy played for the Westmeath Under 20 side in their championship clash with Offaly but unfortunately they were defeated. Meanwhile, Tony O’Keeffe, mentor, and Ruairi Ó Duibhir, player, were both involved in Westmeath’s excellent minor win over Down last Saturday.

Adult Challenge

In their continued built up to their opening league fixture Southern Gaels emerged victorious in a challenge against Tremane on Sunday last on a scoreline of 2-18 to 1-12.

Under 17

The minor side played their first League fixture last Sunday but unfortunately were defeated on a score-line of 5-17 to 2-10 by a strong Cullion/Delvin side.
