All star footballer, Dessie Dolan, was expected to be ratified as the new Westmeath senior football manager at a GAA county board meeting last night (Wednesday ).

The 2004 Leinster senior football championship medallist will fill the managerial void created following the surprise departure of Jack Cooney in August and he will be accompanied by fellow All star winner, John Keane, on the sideline, as the Lake County aim to maintain continuity in the post Tailteann Cup success era.

The pair joined Cooney’s management team for the 2022 league and championship campaigns and will strive for promotion from Division 3 of the Allianz National Football League and a consolidation of their Sam Maguire status in 2023.

Westmeath were the inaugural winners of the Tailteann Cup in July when they defeated Cavan in an enthralling showpiece occasion and it was hoped that Jack Cooney would remain at the managerial helm as the Lake County looked towards further pastures positive.

The decision to appoint Dolan, in tandem with Keane as team coach, will ensure continuity and maintain a positive mindset amongst management and players as Westmeath seek to build upon the silverware success of 2022.
