McHale formally parts company with Athlone following poor start to competitive season

Following a disappointing start to the club’s All County Football League campaign, Athlone GAA have parted company with senior team manager, Liam McHale.

Defeat to Maryland in the club’s most recent fixture left the club without a competitive victory to date this campaign, Athlone opting to cut short McHale’s third successive year as manager.

The former All-Star footballer was appointed Athlone manager in 2020 and in his first campaign saw his charges reach the semi-final of the senior football championship where they were defeated by Tyrrellspass.

His second season at the helm was not as successful, Athlone achieving just one solitary championship win, the result of which saw the club relegated to the second tier of senior football for 2022.

Selectors, Fergal Murray and Eoin Jordan, will remain at the managerial helm as Athlone seek to account for Ballymore in their next league fixture which throws in tomorrow, St Patrick’s Day, at 11.30am.
