Call for provision of appropriate controlled pedestrian crossing on University Road

Local Fianna Fáil Councillor, Frankie Keena, is seeking the provision of an appropriate controlled pedestrian crossing on University Road near the Spar store in Garrycastle.

The present Cathaoirleach of Westmeath County Council, in addressing his fellow elected representatives and local authority executive at the most recent sitting of the Athlone-Moate Municipal District, noted the high volume of traffic which passed through the relevant location, in which there are concentrated numbers of pedestrians on a regular basis.

“This is a highly residential area and is n close proximity to our new university and the SOLAS training centre. Individuals are depending on the goodwill of motorists to slow down as they approach the roundabout at the Spar store so I believe the need is great to provide a pedestrian crossing on this particular stretch of road,” Cllr Keena asserted.

Responding, director of services, Mr Barry Kehoe, stated that this route would be considered as part of the Active Travel programme for the town.

“The matter of such pedestrian crossings will be considered as part of this programme,” Mr Kehoe commented.
