The club’s League of Ireland First Division campaign now concluded, Athlone Town are seeking to hire a new first team manager/head coach following the decision by Paul Doolin to step away from the role.

Appointed on a short term deal in August to replace former Athlone Town player, Adrian Carberry (marking a return to League of Ireland managerial activity following a 12 year absence ), Doolin manned the sideline for the closing eight games of the Town’s competitive campaign, winning three, losing three and drawing two, as the Lissywollen based club missed out on a coveted play-off position.

Athlone completed their League of Ireland First Division campaign with a home defeat to Cobh Rambler on Friday night, finishing in seventh position, just four points adrift of the play-off places.

Club Statement

A statement released by the club this week expressed satisfaction with Doolin’s achievements during his brief term in the role of first team manager.

‘The board of Athlone Town AFC can officially confirm that Paul Doolin has opted not to continue as manager of our men’s senior first team. Paul agreed to come on board as manager for the final eight games of the mens’ First Division 2021 season.

‘While the club was very happy with what was achieved during that short spell, Paul informed the club that he feels unable to continue in the role due to work and family commitments. While the club would have liked Paul to stay on, we fully respect his decision.

‘Athlone AFC would like to put on the record its thanks to Paul and wish him every success for the future.

‘The club will now seek to have a new manager/head coach in place for the 2022 LOI First Division campaign.’
