Public online appeal launched to repatriate family fatally injured in Ballinasloe tragedy

A GoFundMe page to repatriate the bodies of a family killed in a crash in Ballinasloe to Erbil in the Kurdish region of Iraq, has raised over €90,000.

Karzan Ahmed and his wife Shahen, as well as their nine month old baby Lina, were among four people who died in a vehicle collision on the M6 near Ballinasloe on Thursday evening last.

The driver of the second vehicle was travelling in the wrong direction on the motorway prior to the fatal accident occurring.

John Carey, a friend and colleague of Karzan, launched the GoFundMe page this week with significant and worth financial contributions being made to the online appeal.

John described Karzan as "a lovely, gentle soul and great entomologist", encouraging donations to enable a "sense of comfort for those people affected by this awful tragedy."

The organisers of the fundraiser say baby Lina never got to meet her family in Iraq and are trying to bring their bodies back home to be with their loved ones.
