Hurlers and Marist suffer narrow losses

Westmeath have endured a difficult start in Division 2A of the Allianz Hurling League as Kerry eked out a narrow win at Cusack Park last Sunday.

That result leaves Westmeath, who now travel to Newbridge for a contest with Kildare, having only registered one point. Derek McNicholas’ excellence scoring 1-5 for Westmeath wasn’t enough as Brian Hanley's team eventually crashed to a 3-13 to 2-15 defeat at the end of an eventful and entertaining match.

There has been significant debate and speculation about the make up of the senior panel within the county, but this was a decent display despite the reversal. A similar level of industry will be necessary in Newbridge as Westmeath continue their Championship preparations.

Meanwhile Marist College were beaten by the brilliance of Colaiste Eoin's Conn O’Ceallachain in Saturday’s Leinster Schools Senior A football final at Croke Park.

O'Ceallachain kicked nine points and was a potent threat throughout for the Dubliners, who took the provincial spoils for the first time since 1998.

An early Charlie McMickan goal had given Marist a dash of hope and the Athlone side went in 1-5 to 0-5 ahead at the break. Niall Neary was also in fine form for Marist, who were rocked when Colm O'Neill scored a vital goal for Colaiste Eoin, who held on for a 1-10 to 1-8 success.
