New additions to Discover Mullingar line up

Locals and visitors alike are being encouraged to come out and enjoy an afternoon of free activities with fun for all the family at this weekend’s Discover Mullingar Day on Sunday September 27.

Organised by Fáilte Ireland, Waterways Ireland, and Westmeath County Council, the open day will provide an opportunity to raise awareness of the tourism assets of the Mullingar region.

A range of activites will be represented on the day, including angling displays, arts, drama and craft-based activities, food demonstrations, live music, and competitions. Locals will be also able to enjoy a historical walking tour of Mullingar, a sub-aqua demonstration, sailing boat display, and boat trips.

And the line up for this year’s Discover Mullingar Day just keeps getting better, with a host of new events added to the published schedule.

Mullingar is a town famous for its music, and the Discover Mullingar Committee are delighted to anounce that there will now be a live music area on Cosgroves Square on Sunday. Local raconteur Marty Mulligan has organised a line up from 12-6pm beginning with a trad session and then featuring The Shy Talks, The Sunday Jumpers, Mystery White Boys, Innate, Tennesee Breakdown, Waiting to Explode, The Egg and Spoons and finally finishing with Marty Mulligan and The Aftermath.

New acts for Market Square include a Salsa dancing demonstration from RnMdance at midday, Bozo the Clown children’s show at 1pm, and a high octane dance troupe finale with Energyplus School of Dance at 4pm.

Also new to the Market area is an event run by Mullingar School of Music, where children will be able to try out a variety of instruments supplied by Rochforts.

There will also be a great fancy dress competition for children to dress up as their favourite character. Watch out for details of Mullingars new bowling alley Rock and Bowl and win some great prizes. You can also check out the Sportszone at Loreto College, where you will be able to participate in a huge variety of sports and learn about great new activities.

The Discover Mullingar initiative is part of a broader campaign to develop and promote Ireland’s Lakelands and Inland Waterways, which aims to significantly boost visitor numbers to the Lakeland regions over the next three years.

Please note that music from the Irish Midland Youth Orchestra will replace the trad session advertised in the schedule.
